Fujian, China
White Oriental Beauty comes from the highlands of Fujian Province, where the tea grows at around 1,100 meters above sea level.
It is made from one bud and two leaves of the Qing Xin Da Mao cultivar, originally developed in Taiwan and introduced to mainland China in the late 1990s.
The leaves are bitten by Jacobiasca formosana, the same leafhopper associated with traditional Oriental Beauty oolong. In response, the plant produces aromatic compounds that contribute to the tea’s characteristic floral, honeyed and fruity profile.
The leaves are handpicked in late June, gently withered in the sun and baked at low temperatures. The result combines the light character of white tea with the distinctive aromatic profile associated with Oriental Beauty.
