Form and function

Made for your tea table

The dragon gaiwan has a broad, projecting rim and a decorated lid that gives the fingers a secure visual and tactile guide while pouring. Raised dragon and cloud relief catches the light across its dark surface, making it a striking gongfu vessel.

The gaiwan is a covered tea bowl with a lid, used in China since the Ming period for brewing and serving tea. During a gongfu tea session, the lid is angled to hold back leaves as the infusion is poured into a fairness pitcher or cups.

Made in China from dark ceramic, this piece shows warm brown highlights along the carved relief and a substantial footed base. Rinse gently after brewing and dry the detailed surface thoroughly.
