The tea

A closer look

The footed matcha cup combines a low, rounded body with a generous rim, making it inviting for whisking and drinking tea. Its Shino glaze moves from milky white to peach and soft green, with dark wood-fired accents caught in a fine network of visible crazing.

This open, stable profile belongs to the chawan tradition of matcha preparation, where the tea is whisked and served in one bowl. Shino developed as a distinctive glaze style in Japan's Mino kilns during the late sixteenth century, valued for its opaque, softly changing surface.

The cup is made in China and finished with wood firing, visible in the brown foot and varied ash marks. Colour gathers unevenly around the rim and lower wall. Rinse gently and dry before storing.
