A closer look

Chawan matcha bowl has a gently rounded body, broad open mouth and raised foot, giving whisking room while the foot makes it comfortable to hold. Its substantial walls and irregular rim suit a tactile, attentive preparation.

Chawan is the Japanese term for a tea bowl, while this form is central to chanoyu, where matcha is whisked directly in the bowl and presented to the guest. Shino glaze emerged in Japan during the Momoyama period, valued for soft surfaces and expressive variation.

Made in China in a wood-fired Shino style, this bowl shows russet, ash-like and grey-brown glaze movement, with an exposed foot and firing marks adding contrast. Rinse gently with warm water, dry fully, and avoid abrupt temperature changes.
